The Kalbaryos of Poblacion, Makati City

I decided to spend my Holy Thursday morning on the streets of Brgy Poblacion. The streets of Poblacion are quite popular -- e.g. the girlie bars of Burgos St, Kalayaan Avenue (this is the road that would lead you to Rockwell), and of course Makati Avenue. But unbeknownst to many, during Holy Week, the various Samahans, in this old part of Makati City, change the landscape of what used to be marked by earthly, if not profane. They put up religious tableaus or kalbaryos to mark the Lord's Paschal Mystery. Kalbaryos are mounted in the various streets of Poblacion and the residents would gather to chant the Pasyong Mahal or the Pabasa. It is, and I am borrowing the words of Dr. Jaime Laya, "touching how, in the 21st century and just a stone's throw away from the skyscrapers of the central business district, the original residents of Makati continue in the practice of their faith, unheeding of and unnoticed..." Basilica Minore del Santo Niño de Cebu

The Basilica Minore del Sto. Niño is the center of the oldest Christian devotion in the Philippines. It houses the image of the Sto. Niño de Cebu, a representation of the child Jesus, which was brought by Ferdinand Magellan in 1521.Three churches have been built before the present one.The first church, by Fr. Diego de Herrera, was made of Nipa and Wood and was burnt down in 1566. The next church, also of light materials, was constructed by Fr. Pedro Torres and also got burnt in 1628. The third church, made of bricks and stones was started by Fr. Juan de Medina. It fell down on 1629.On February 29, 1735, Fr. In 1588, in this village known as Malate, the Augustinian friars built a church in honor of Nuestra Señora de los Remedios. The stone church and convent, built in 1591, suffered heavily during the earthquake of 1645 and 1863, while both buildings were pulled down in 1667 on orders of Governor General Manrique de Lara, who feared an invasion by the pirate Koxinga. But the Sino corsair died in Formosa or Taiwan just before the invasion, and the church was rebuilt later that year, and during the next three years, with the same stones and bricks. When the British landed in Manila in 1762, they made the church their headquarters. Repairs had to be made after the British left the following year. Her husband died 12 years ago and her only daughter has her own family already. She lives on her own. And I forgot to ask her name.

The Cebu Catherdal took about a century to complete because of frequent interruptions. One of three diocese created in 1595 (the other two being Nueva Segovia and Nueva Caceres), Cebu was raised to the status of archdiocese in 1934 with the dioceses of Calbayog, Jaro, Zamboanga, Bacolod, and Cagayan de Oro as suffragans. During the Spanish period, Cebu had the most extensive territory because Guam and the Marianas fell under its jurisdiction.
